Modern Manila is a fascinating mix of historic culture and urban development.
When the Spaniards arrived in the 1500’s, they built a walled city in place of the kuta (fort) of Rajah Soliman. This city is now known as Intramuros, one of the best models of a medieval fort outside Europe. Intramuros contains the UNESCO World Heritage Site San Agustin Church and the San Agustin Museum. The compound contains fine religious artefacts and relics from the Galleon Trade.
Filipinos are crazy about shopping. The Divisoria area has no less than 168 malls. The area is the backbone of Manila’s buy & sell trade. The Philippines is famours for South Sea pearls, hand-woven cloths, embroidered fineries, coral and mother-of-pearl accessories, and handmade. Shop for handicrafts, antiques and souvenirs in Manila’s Quiapo district: ilalim ng tulay (literally, “under the bridge”).
Manila’s nightlife is one of the most vibrant in Asia. Clubs, bars & music lounges with plenty of live music on offer including jazz, blues & indigenous music. While you are there enjoy the local beer – San Miguel.
